Every vote is earned.
Voting rights are held by readers who read, not by outside audiences. Recognitions are decided across six weighted signals evaluated by both community and moderators.

From the Atelier
Why Recognitions Matter Our seasonal recognitions reflect the books, readers, and authors who resonate most within our own community.
Every recognition is decided entirely by the membership. No editorial panel, no algorithm, no sponsor influence. Only members who completed that quarter's reading receive a ballot, because only a reader who did the work has standing to judge the work. Votes are weighted across multiple signals so no single behavior can dominate the outcome, including completion of the reading, the depth of a member's discussion contributions, the thoughtfulness of their written reflection, consistency of participation across the full quarter, feedback from fellow members, and a final rigor and civility check from the moderator team.
Our role is to educate members on this process so their engagement is informed, ethical, and meaningful. We never instruct members how to vote. We explain why participation matters and let readers decide.

What the weighting actually measures
Recognition is not a popularity result and it is not a volume result. It measures whether a member did the reading and whether their presence improved the reading of others.

Five rounds, published methodology
Round one. Eligibility
Ballots are issued only to members who completed that quarter's reading. Only a reader who did the work has standing to judge the work.
Round two. Nomination
Members put forward readers, discussions, and books from the quarter, with a written reason attached to each nomination.
Round three. Deliberation
Nominations are published. Members read the reasoning of others before voting, which is the point of publishing them.
Round four. Ballot
Votes are weighted across multiple signals so no single behaviour can dominate an outcome.
Round five. Review and announcement
Moderators run a rigor and civility check, then results and methodology are published together.
Ethical participation
Readers informed, never instructed
The line between education and instruction is the most important line we hold. Everything below sits on one side of it or the other.
We do this
- Explain how weighting works and publish it before a ballot opens.
- Explain what shelving and reviewing do for discoverability.
- Publish nomination reasoning so members can weigh it themselves.
- Publish results with the methodology attached.
We never do this
- Suggest a candidate, a rating, or a preferred outcome.
- Require any member to shelve, rate, or review anything.
- Publish the private completions log or any member's name without consent.
- Time community engagement to affect a platform ranking.
