The four pledges
Stated plainly, so they can be held against us
No paid reviews
No money, product, or membership benefit is ever exchanged for a review, in either direction.
No forced ratings
No member is required to rate any book. Participation in the studio does not depend on it.
No artificial engagement
We do not coordinate timing, volume, or wording of any platform activity.
No manipulation of platforms
We do not attempt to influence rankings, algorithms, or recommendation systems.
Transparency in practice
How each commitment is made checkable
A principle nobody can audit is a slogan. These are the mechanisms that let a reader or an author verify ours.
Published methodology
Recognition weighting and voting rules are published before every ballot opens, and results are released with the methodology attached.
Open eligibility rules
The condition for receiving a ballot is a single, stated fact. The member completed the reading. There is no discretionary list.
No sponsored placements
A featured selection cannot be purchased. No author, publisher, or platform has ever paid for placement, and none will.
Criticism stays published
Critical reader responses are never removed at an author's request. Moderation acts on conduct, never on conclusions.
Voluntary platform activity
Every shelving, rating, and review is a member's own decision, made on their own schedule and in their own words.
Correctable record
Where we get something wrong, the correction is published in the same place as the original, not quietly edited into it.
